P.P. O’Connor is delighted to be supporting STRABAG UK on the Haweswater Aqueduct Resilience Programme (HARP), one of the UK’s most significant water infrastructure schemes.
Delivered on behalf of United Utilities, the programme will help secure the long-term resilience of drinking water supplies for communities across Cumbria, Lancashire and Greater Manchester for future generations.
The Haweswater Aqueduct supplies around 570 million litres of water to 2.5 million people every day. To ensure the resilience of the asset for generations to come, HARP will upgrade c.50km of tunnel segments of the existing 110km aqueduct, through a series of major engineering works.
P.P. O’Connor has been appointed to deliver the enabling earthworks required to facilitate future tunnelling operations. Our works are creating the infrastructure and site platforms at Haslingden and Woodgate Hill which are necessary for the next phase of construction and include:
- Topsoil stripping and stockpiling
- Cut and fill earthworks
- Import and placement of stone for site access roads and working platforms
- Drainage installation
- Construction of site roads and compound areas
These activities are essential in preparing the sites for the specialist tunnelling works that will follow, ensuring safe and efficient access for plant, equipment and personnel throughout the construction programme.
The contract draws on P.P. O’Connor’s extensive expertise in earthworks, groundworks and infrastructure delivery, with our teams working collaboratively alongside STRABAG and the wider supply chain to help achieve the scheme’s objectives. Through careful planning, efficient resource management and a strong commitment to health, safety and environmental performance, we are proud to be contributing to this major programme.
