P.P. O’Connor has been appointed as principal contractor to undertake enabling works at the former GMP Headquarters site in Trafford, Manchester.
The 15‑week programme commenced in March 2026 and includes asbestos removal and full internal strip of the ex-policing hub. Structural demolition is now underway whiich will be followed by slab and foundation removal.
Operating as Principal Contractor, P.P. O’Connor is responsible for the management and coordination of all site activities, with a particular focus on safe sequencing and regulatory compliance within a constrained urban environment.

The project is being delivered for client FEC, with Quartz Project Services appointed as Project Consultants. The appointment reflects P.P. O’Connor’s extensive experience in complex enabling works, particularly schemes requiring the integration of asbestos removal with structural demolition and groundworks within tightly programmed environments.
A spokesperson for P.P. O’Connor commented:
“This project draws on our core expertise in providing an enabling works package, combining asbestos removal, demolition and ground engineering within a controlled and efficiently sequenced programme. We are working collaboratively with the client and project team to ensure safe, compliant and timely delivery.”
Sustainability has been a key aspect of the programme of works to date. There has been a strong focus on segregation of materials to minimise waste to landfill and ensuring hazardous waste, such as asbestos, is managed safely and compliantly.
Completion of the works will provide a cleared and structurally prepared platform, forming a critical first phase to enable subsequent redevelopment of the Stretford site.
